Make/Shift/Space - STS Signmakers

May - June 2016

During a residency with Make/Shift/Space, I created a roaming signmaking workshop, inviting the audience to both commission signs and be workers in the workshop. The resulting 54 signs were made by me and six assistants over 10 days, with no restrictions on their usage once they left the workshop. You can find them installed at many businesses and public spaces in Balsall Heath. The commissions ranged from the political 'VOTE STAY' and 'SAVE THE OLD PRINT WORKS' to the functional 'KEEP OUR PARK CLEAN DON'T LITTER 100%' to the personal 'KILL ME NOW' and 'THIS IS NOT OK'. The resulting images are a direct result of a very particular time in Balsall Heath's history.

Images: The 'Don't Cut Balsall Heath in Half' sign was used by St Paul's Trust in the imagery for a parliamentary campaign. 'NEW NEW NEW' was commissioned by New Art West Midlands, and they then worked with designed Keith Dodds to create a new identity for the organisation using the sign as a starting point.
