Make Shift Space - STS Signmakers

May - June 2016

During a residency with Make/Shift/Space, I created a roaming signmaking workshop, inviting the audience to both commission signs and be workers in the workshop. The resulting 54 signs were made by me and six assistants over 10 days. You can find them installed at many businesses and public spaces in Balsall Heath. The commissions ranged from the political 'VOTE STAY' and 'SAVE THE OLD PRINT WORKS' to the functional 'KEEP OUR PARK CLEAN DON'T LITTER 100%' to the personal 'KILL ME NOW' and 'THIS IS NOT OK'. The resulting images are a direct result of a very particular time in Balsall Heath's history.

Make/Shift/Space is a portable artist structure which hosts a programme of live art-making through residencies, workshops and events within temporary public locations. Devised by artist-duo Hickey+Warner, the roving platform connects the mechanics of everyday space with the process of artistic production, giving visibility to the work that artists do.  Make/Shift/Space provides an interface for exchange between artist, audience and the built environment; brokering conversations about social interaction, public landscapes and artistic activity.
