TILE MAKING AS ART PRACTICE 2025-26 by Sarah Taylor Silverwood
My practice works across animation, textiles, ceramics, sculpture and print. The themes of my work are playful storytelling; materiality and hand-crafted processes; and responsive and ambitious collaboration. The repeated square tile emerged as a natural extension of my earlier work in comics and animation, where meaning is built through sequences of images. Working with tiles allows me to translate into a physical, modular form, where each unit operates both independently and as part of a larger narrative.
Tiles also hold the capacity to tell stories through their material and use. As a functional art form, they are lived with over time, recording touch, wear, and shifts in their environment. Their permanence within a site allows them to build a relationship with place, embedding narrative in the everyday. I am also interested in the way a clay body itself can engage with a location. Through its connection to local geology and histories of industry, the material carries a sense of place, allowing each work to be rooted in its context.
TILE MAKING DEMOS for RETROFIT HOUSE ARCHITECTURE FESTIVAL, CIVIC SQUARE, 2025
In 2025 I worked with Civic Square to demo tile making and explore surface possibilities. We explored local clays and sampled brick clay from Ketley Brick quarry. I worked with local people to explore different stages of the process. The project was featured in The Guardian.
TILE COMMISSIONS & WORK IN PROGRESS, 2025-26
I am making bespoke tile murals for various clients, both for galleries like Warwick Arts Centre and private commissions for domestic spaces. I’m exploring colour and drawing through clay, often working collaboratively.
TILE MAKING WITH MINERVA WOMEN'S GROUP, 2025
I worked with the Minerva Women’s Group at Grand Union Gallery over a number of sessions to learn how to make, design and decorate tile for their community garden.
TILE SAMPLES, 2025-26
Tile samples for future projects, developed in the studio.

TILE MAKING WITH MATERIAL CULTURES, 2026
I worked with Material Cultures on a new building project in Darnall, Sheffield. Material Cultures is a not-for-profit design and research organisation working at the intersection of natural materials, low embodied carbon construction and construction technology. We made tiles with the community for a new building.
